James Tenney : My
composition teacher at CalArts
Wadada Leo Smith : Another of my
composition teachers at CalArts, and a unique creative artist
Melissa Hui : My first composition
teacher at Stanford and in general, and a wonderful friend and mentor
Other Minds :
San Francisco non-profit org that supports and presents new music. I've worked for Other Minds since 2006.
RadiOM :
A project of Other Minds to preserve and make available ca. 60 years of new music interviews, concerts, documentaries.
The Collected :
A group of fellow young composers with whom I produce concerts, recordings, all kinds of fun new music stuff.
California
Institute of the Arts : Where dysfunction helps you learn
REDCAT
: Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater, located on the downhill side of Walt
Disney Music Center in downtown L.A.
There's lots of interesting work being presented here in conjunction
with CalArts, although students gripe it should be a better champion of student
work.
Stanford
University : I spent five years at Stanford, and really loved it. It looks like a resort, and generally
people seem pretty happy to be there.
I wouldn't mind going back some day.
CCM
– University of Cincinnati : I attended their Music X festival in
June 2005, and had a piece performed.
I was thoroughly underwhelmed with the whole thing, but had a great time
talking to guest composer Frederic Rzewski, making a few new friends, and
visiting the Great American Ballpark for the first time (Braves won).
Mixed
Company : My college a cappella group
Sinister Dexter : An SF-based horn
band; I used to play bass
Oakland Athletics : My father grew
up in Oakland, so despite living in San Francisco, I have never rooted for the Giants. I've been watching the A's since early childhood; these days I look forward to $2 Wednesdays and starts by
Rich Harden.
